The documentary, Air Combat - Combat Crew: The Raid On Romania is part of U.S. News & World Report's film Air Combat series of videos that are full of action-packed archival battle footage and compelling narration.  This series of films explores the astonishing events that reveal America's first century in the skies.  "Combat Crew: The Raid On Romania" shows the planning and execution of Operation Tidal Wave whose objective was the low level bombing of the Axis oil fields in Ploesti, Romania during World War II.  The B-24 Liberator heavy bombers used to attack the Ploesti oil fields were flown from an Allied air base in Algeria.  Because of the extreme distance to the Ploesti target, the B-24s would have to fly without fighter escort, which along with navigational errors on the mission lead to an unexpectedly high percentage of bombers being shot down.  While the bombers flew at tree-top level to avoid radar detection and were operating under a radio silence order, early radio traffic as the B-24s left Algeria alerted the Germans that a big mission was underway in the general direction of Romania.  As the bombers approached, Luftwaffe fighters at air fields around Ploesti were launched to attack the Liberators.  When the dust settled over fifty bombers had been shot down.  Although sixty percent of oil production was initially shut down after the B-24's bombing attack, within sixty days the oil refinery was producing at one hundred percent.  This initial raid in 1943 was the first of many that by late summer of 1944 had completely destroyed the Ploesti oil refineries.  Narrated by Monte Markham.  Full screen in black & white and color.  Released in 1998.  Runtime 45 minutes.
