Bitter Victory
World War II
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

The lesser-known movie, Bitter Victory, is a masterpiece of anti-war sentiment but is nonetheless possessed of a complexity and ambiguity that make it a poignant film.  Set during World War II and taking place mainly in the Libyian Desert, the film establishes a rivalry between the two main characters from the beginning.  The charismatic Captain James Leith and his cowardly superior, Major David Brand.  Both accept a dangerous asignment to be sent to Libya in order to recover top-secret documents.  Prior to departing, however, Brand sees his wife Jane dancing with the Captain and immediately becomes jealous.  What becomes apparent is that Leith and Jane were lovers before the war.  The rest of the film follows the two men's journey made even more perilous by their intense dislike for one another.  This action drama then moves towards a climatic ending that plays up the absurdity of war.  Starring Richard Burton, Curt Jurgens and Ruth Roman among others.  Full screen in black and white.  Released in 1957.  Runtime 102 minutes.
