Captains Courageous
MGM/UA Home Video (Warner Brothers)

The movie, Captains Courageous, is an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's sea classic.  The central character, Manuel, is a Portuguese fisherman who teaches human values to a millionaire's spoiled young son.  Manuel exhibits moods ranging from grave to jolly and mystical to courageous as he interacts with the young boy.  The story begins when a twelve year old Harvey Cheyne falls overboard while bound for Europe with his father.  The transformation of the boy begins almost as soon as he has rescued from the cold sea by Manuel who brings him aboard a New England fishing schooner captained by a man named Disko.  Onced recovered from his ordeal, the young boy is put to work alongside the Captain's son.  Slowly but surely the boy, with the help of Manuel, masters the skills of a fisherman and in so doing transforms from a brat into a gallant and brave apprentice.  This classic movie features magnificent sea photography and an all-star cast and is well worth watching.  Starring Spencer Tracy, Mickey Rooney and Lionel Barrymore among others.  Full screen in black and white.  Released in 1937.  Runtime 118 minutes.
