The movie, Cold Mountain, is a Civil War saga which addresses romance, friendship and the ravages of war both on the battlefield and on the home front. This film is more than a simple love story, however, as it also captures the horrors of war for those fighting it and for those left behind. This movie is based on a Charles Frazier novel that is, in the end, a tale of hope, longing, redemption, second chances and faith. The central plot of the story focuses on a lead character from North Carolina who goes off to war to fight for the Confederacy. Eventually he decides that he has had enough of war and tries to make his way back home despite the perils of being a deserter. Back home, his love interest must deal with the loss of her father who was a local preacher along with the shortages of food brought on by war. She is helped in this task of survial by a poor, back woods girl who can work the land as well as any man. This picture won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
