One Man's Hero
Pre-Civil War
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

The movie, One Man's Hero, is a serious-minded historical saga that casts light on a rarely covered corner of American history, the "St. Patrick's Brigade" which operated in the Mexican-American war of the 1840s.  The plot centers on a respected Irish-American officer, John Riley, who rebels when several United States Army soldiers, fellow immigrants, are brutalized due to their Catholic faith.  Riley decides to go A.W.O.L. with his men, eventually siding with the Mexican's in their fight to hold onto territories that would years-later become the American southwest.  It is a tragic tale, recalling a time in our nation's history when Catholics, especially Irish ones, were widely mistrusted and depised by America's Protestant majority.  This story definitely gives a contrary view to the remember-the-Alamo version of American History especially as it relates to the Mexican-American War.  After viewing this film you can not help but wonder who were the "good-guys" in this conflict.  Overall, One Man's Hero, is worth watching and is similar to another factual epic about a renegade warrior who casts his lot with different culture; Lawrence Of Arabia  Starring Tom Berenger, Joaquim de Almeida and Daniela Romo among others.  Widescreen in color.  Released in 1998.  Runtime 122 minutes.
