The trio soon find themselves part of a devalued species, trapped and imprisoned by the apes. Eventually one astronaut named Taylor manages to break out with the assistance of a couple of compassionate chimps. As Taylor makes his journey, he makes a startling, upsetting discovery about the planet and realizes mankind has come full circle.
