The Fighting 69th
World War I
MGM/UA Home Video (Warner Brothers)

The Fighting 69th movie focuses on the famed Irish-American regiment that's gone "over there" into the muddy trenches of World War I.  The central character is the tough, cocky Jerry Plunkett who apparently fears nothing until he faces the horrors of battle in France.  With shells screaming overhead and friends jerking upright and then falling silent, Jerry discovers something he never new: stark, incapacitating fear.  While initially a loner, Plunkett works through his fear of battle and redeems himself in the eyes of his fellow soldiers by single-handedly rescuing his regiment when it looks like the enemy has it helplessly pinned down in a hell of bullets and barbed wire.  Starring James Cagney, Pat O'brien and Dennis Morgan among others.  Fullscreen in black and white.  Released in 1940.  Runtime 90 minutes.
