PBS Home Video

The movie documentary, The Great War And The Shaping Of The 20th Century: Total War & Slaughter (Vol.2) includes the seperate titles Total War and Slaughter.  The documentary film, Total War,  shows that by 1915, the conflict had spread across boundaries between continents and peoples becoming truely a global war a fact validated by the unlikely battles between Turks and Australians on the Turkish cliffs of Gallipoli.  This episode chronicles the lives of very different participants and concludes with the telling of the first confirmed case of genocide in the 20th century, the mass murder of Armenian civilians which planted the seeds for the future in a young German soldier named Adolph Hitler.  The documentory film, Slaughter,  reveals a new meaning to the term death on the battlefield which represented a horror summed up by the word slaughter.  This episode reveals some the most appalling battles in human history including the Battles Of Verdun, The Somme and Passchendaele where over 2.5 million men from all combatants lost their lives.  This episode further shows the carnage and highlights the ingenious ways men kept their sanity behind the lines using music, theater and trench newsletters to recreate the world they left behind.  Note: This VHS tape was formerly the property of the Rochester Hills public library and was purchased at a recent Friends Of The Library book sale.  Full screen in color.  Released in 1996.  Runtime approximately 120 minutes.
