Top Gun: The Navy's Fighter Weapons School (The Power Series)
Motorbooks International

The book, Top Gun: The Navy's Fighter Weapons School (The Power Series), tells the often told but always amazing story of the United States Navy's "Top Gun" aerial gunnery training school located at Mirimar Naval Air Station, California.  The author had "behind-the-scenes" access to "Fightertown U.S.A" and was able to capture in words and photographs the essence of this program.  The experiences of Naval aviation during the Vietnam War suggested that future Naval aviators would have to improve their skill-set in aerial dogfights.  While they had a double digit kill ratio in the Korean War, the Vietnam War saw this supremacy drop to a ratio of 2 to 1 meaning they shot down two aircraft for every aircraft lost.  This was deemed unacceptable to the Navy "brass" and it was from this experience that the "Top Gun" training program was created.  The "Top Gun" training school is held over a two-week period and includes both class time and flight training.  In order to make the training more realistic, an "Adversary Squadron" was created using aircraft similar to the Russian MiG-21 in terms of performance.  This squadron is flown by extremely skilled instructors which means every new student to the program needs to be at the top of their game in order to survive the mock air engagements.  This training, where the best of the best are trained is "about all-out air-to-air combat and defining the edge of the envelope."  "Top Gun: The Navy's Fighter Weapons School" begins with Acknowledgements and includes the following chapters: 1) Origins; 2) A History of Air Combat; 3) The Learning Curve; 4) Fight's On; 5) Section Tactics and 6) Knock It Off.  The body of this book is followed by a Glossary.  In addition to an informative narrative, this book includes the following features: 1) Approximately 44 black and white photographs; 2) About 54 color photographs and 3) 2 black and white illustrations.  This book is 126 pages and is in very good condition.  The author is George Hall.  Edition published in 1991.
