Who Killed The Red Baron?
WGBH Boston Video

The documentary, "Who Killed The Red Baron?" takes a fresh look at determining who shot down famed German World War I aviator Manfred von Richtofen on April 21, 1918.  It was on this date, during one of the bloodiest battles of World War I, that Manfred von Richtofen known by most as the Red Baron took off in his bright red Fokker tri-plane in what turned out to be his final mission.  Once airborne, the legendary Red Baron plunged into a furious dogfight against Allied fighters operating over the bloody battle below and was last seen chasing an Allied pilot flying a British Sopwith Camel.  Shortly thereafter, the Red Baron's tri-plane landed roughly in a field with the famous ace who had amassed more than 80 kills to his name, shot dead through the chest by a single bullet.  Since that fateful day, many have claimed or received credit for shooting down the Red Baron.  "Who Killed The Red Baron?" takes a fresh look at who actually was responsible for the Red Baron's demise.  Using modern forensics and recently discovered eyewitness accounts, this documentary film discloses a probable new identity for the Red Baron's killer.  Through the use of state-of-the-art animation and vivid aerial footage of original and replica fighters, "Who Killed The Red Baron?" cracks one of the most puzzling of all aviation mysteries.  Along the way, this film also reveals the extraordinary story of how World War I air combat advance from a "gentlemanly" sport to a grim and deadly science in just four short years.  "Who Killed The Red Baron?" also includes the following features: 1) Printable materials for educators; 2) Access to the "Who Killed the Red Baron?"
